Oral Communication

"Through talk, students not only communicate information but also explore and come to understand ideas and concepts; identify and solve problems; organize their experience and knowledge; and express and clarify their thoughts, feelings, and opinions. When they converse about information and ideas, they become aware not only of the various perspectives of other speakers and writers but also of the language structures and conventions they use."

Reading & Literature Studies

"An effective reader is one who not only grasps the ideas communicated in a text but is able to apply them in new contexts. To do this, the reader must be able to think clearly, creatively, and critically about the ideas and informa- tion encountered in texts in order to understand, analyse, and absorb them and to recog- nize their relevance in other contexts."

Writing

"The forms and genres explored may include essays, reports, short stories, poetry, scripts, journals, letters, biographies, children’s stories, articles, reviews, précis, explanations, instructions, notes, procedures, résumés, and advertisements."

Media Studies

"Media studies focuses on the construction of meaning through the combination of several media “languages” – images, sounds, graphics, and words."

Studying The Great Gatsby with 4U students is a blast from the past! This story allows us to consider how dreams can impact reality and how the pursuit of material development may compromise spiritual development. F. S. Fitzgerald offers a harsh criticism of 1920s and The American Dream.

In this unit, students read the text at home and engaged in discussions and activities at school. Some of the activities included:

  • Close Reading Questions

  • Gallery Walk

  • 5 Journals (2 to Submit for Evaluation)

  • Escape Room

  • Listen & React to Podcast

  • Think-Pair-Share

  • Padlet Timeline

  • Padlet Digital Reserve

ENG3C - Grammar

Grammar is so important. Poor grammar can leave a lasting bad impression on those who read your work! I believe these rules are important to review each year. Here are some of the activities that can be done in this unit!

What makes this unit more fun is taking those grammar rules and putting them into a game! In this unit students review what they have learned in:

  • Snakes & Ladders (Using Google Forms)

  • Connect 4
