Spin the dice to determine your work-out! Everyone loves board games so why not put a fun spin on your traditional board game by getting up, and getting moving! This game works on the 5 components of health-related fitness.

Ideas for action and extension!
Have students come up with their own fitness circuit that they could do at home or at school to develop 1 component of health-related fitness. Have students create their own active board game with curriculum concepts and play it at lunch!

Student Guide
Teacher Guide
An introduction to creating a personal fitness plan. This teacher guide and student workbook by PHE Canada allows students to monitor their physical activity and inactive time, reflect, set S.M.A.R.T goals, and plan future physical activity that meets their movement goals.

This is an online physical literacy assessment program for active participation, living skills, movement skills, and fitness skills.

These Games are some of my favourites, however PHE Canada provides more games for in-school and at-home learning environments. These games teach movement competence in fun, engaging ways.

This assignment takes students from movement to movement competence by promoting exploring movement anywhere, anytime. It is well informed by Ontario Health & Physical Education curriculum objectives. This assignment is 4 parts. It can be done over the course of a month or longer and is applicable to current contexts.

Ideas for action and extension!
Take action after the completion of the assignment to create an alternative sports day. Use this assignment as a stepping stone for students in creating a personal fitness plan or sports training plan. Extend the assignment to multiple grades by allowing grade 12 students to evaluate the effectiveness of grade 9/10 personal fitness plans!

This Snakes and Ladders game combines fitness and nutrition by getting students' hearts pumping while quizzing them on nutritional facts. This is meant to be used a as a review lesson after a unit. It could also be used as an Assessment as Learning opportunity to see what students already know.

Human Development & Sexual Health

These 5 workshops by DOVE
cover topics related to the
curriculum expectation Growth & Development by taking students through appearance ideals, media messages, confronting
comparisons, banishing body talk, and being the change.

This nutrition lesson goes into depth about the three main macronutrients. It comes 4 pics, 1 word, case studies, and videos to help make the content more engaging. It can be condensed or expanded upon and took me about 3 days to get through. I ended this lesson with a nutrition board game review class that combined Q-Cards and fitness and asked students to make a three-day meal plan as part of their culminating task.

Substance Use, Abuse, & Related Behaviours
I approached these resources in two ways. The first was asking students to work in groups researching the different topics on the powerpoint and then presenting to the class. They were assigned one mini topic each (as an alternative to me delivering the powerpoint).
The second class I asked students to look at photos from vaping adds and criticize them. I asked them what was appealing and who they thought the target audience was. The entire class then experienced the effects of vaping (e.g., long term negative impact like restricted breathing) by breathing through big straws and pinching their nose shut. They did exercises with it on and then reflected as a group how their life would change if they were to vape every day for a long period of time.
Personal Safety & Injury Prevention

This assignment asks students to look at the world of fitness with a critical eye. Young people are constantly inundated with health and fitness information, but what is reliable, safe, and trustworthy? What messages are being pushed through influencers online? Student not only try these popular workouts in the weight room but reflect on how certain fitness ideals make them feel (emotional safety).

Our society is founded upon a view of health that shines a light on the physical aspect. It wasn’t until recent years that we began to view our health in a more holistic sense, comprising physical, mental, social, and spiritual components. Students will develop a holistic understanding of the factors that affect healthy development and apply this health knowledge as well as living skills to make reasoned decisions and take appropriate action relating to their personal health. Special attention will be given to making connections between how one’s decisions and behaviours as well as environmental factors can affect the wellbeing of oneself and others.
Living Skills

It is extremely important for students to be aware of how to set S.M.A.R.T. goals as they learn to navigate the complex realities of their teenaged years and plan for the future. I recommend beginning the year with this lesson alongside other important organization skills (e.g., making a to-do list, writing due dates on a calendar, etc.).
